In addition to its regular curriculum, John Knox Christian School has the following programs:
Resource: Students at John Knox who have special needs are referred to our Resource Program. At present we have a qualified, full-time resource teacher and part-time assistant. Students participate in the Resource Program through teacher and/or parental referrals. If needed, an assessment by a qualified educational consultant is done, and a full written report is sent home upon completion of the assessment. An individual educational plan is made for each student and these plans are reassessed regularly. Every attempt is made to ensure good communications between parents and the program by way of interviews and written reports.
Speech Pathologist: A speech pathologist comes to school on a regular basis, and is available for assessment of students not having the use of William Osler Health Centre.
Swimming: Students in grade one through grade four participate in a swimming program provided for us by the McMurchy Pool. The program for each grade runs approximately 10 weeks.
Instrumental Music: Students in grade 5-8 participate in a band program. Grade 4s learn the recorder.
Enrichment: At JKCS we provide opportunities for students with an advanced degree of intellectual ability to further develop their God-given gifts. The enrichment program at JKCS provides differentiated classroom curriculum, which deepens and broadens the learning experience.
Athletics: Intramural team sports take place during the lunch recess. Open to students from grade 3-5, these consist of volleyball, soccer, soft ball or floor hockey. In addition, grade 6-8 has the opportunity to participate in soccer, volleyball, basketball and badminton tournaments sponsored by the Toronto area Christian schools. JKCS also has boys’ and girls’ soccer, volleyball and basketball teams in the Dufferin Peel Separate School League. The school also participates in the Toronto District Christian Track and Field day held annually, usually in late May.
Private piano lessons: On various days through the week, two qualified music teachers come to our school for private piano and/or vocal music lessons. These lessons are given at the initiative of the parents, and the cost is not included in the school tuition fee.
Other co-curricular activities: School in the Mall, overnight class trips (Gr. 6-8), class field trips, theatre/drama trips, Battle of the Books, Science Fair, Green Team, Art in the Mall, Reading Buddies, Cleaning up Woodview Park, visiting seniors at Holland Christian Homes, Santa Clause Parade, Kids in the Kitchen, Student’s Council, collecting for Foodbanks, sponsoring a child…and more!
